ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University women's ice team fell short in the ECAC West matchup with a 3-2 overtime loss against Utica College, Saturday evening.
The first period was relatively quick, as play went back and forth with limited stoppages for the first 15 minutes. The Knights sat back and played somewhat defensive with the Pioneers not getting clear cut opportunities until 4:20 left in the first period. The Pioneers struck first and took a 1-0 lead.
The Knights battled back with great resilience and Danica Delry tied the score 1-1 with 2:09 left in the first period. Lyndsey Spatola and Lauren Cusack were credited with the assist.
The Pioneers took another lead 11:59 into the second period on a two man advantage and take a 2-1 lead. Megan Russelo was right on the door step with 3:30 left in the second period, but somehow the puck didn't conform to say ideas as Russelo, when the puck took a right hand turn, just wide of the goal.
The Knights made another comeback to tie the score in the third period with Russelo making amends for the early miss in the second period by scoring in the third. Russelo crossed the blue line along the right side boards and pinged a sensational shot from distance that left the Pioneers goaltender in disbelief.
The overtime period was settled with the Pioneers claiming a 3-2 victory 2:51 into the extra period.
The Knights were outshot 37-13 and Shannon Donnelly made 34 saves in the game.
