MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Neumann University baseball team opened its 2013 season with two wins at the Northeast Challenge. The Knights defeated SUNy-Maritime 11-0 and Rutgers-Newark 16-9.
Matt Spillman, lead the Knights to a 11-0 victory over SUNY Maratime. The senior threw five innings giving up no runs on one hit while striking out three. Ted Fletcher tossed the final two innings to close the game.
The Knights were led offensively by the first four hitters in the lineup. Buddy Eligin, Will Flores, Bill Pace and Tyler Drinkard combined to go 10-14 with seven runs, eight RBI and four stolen bases.
Game two against Rutgers Newark was delayed for 45 minutes because of rain and wind. Playing through wet conditions, Neumann started slowly falling behind Rutgers 6-0 going into the bottom of the second.
The Knight started chipping at the lead, scoring nine runs over the next four innings taking a 9-8 lead. The game was finally decided in the bottom of the 8th when the Knights plated six runs taking a 16-9 lead.
Erik Klimoff threw three scoreless innings to gain the win. Offensively the Knights had 14 hits, led by Will Flores with three, Bill Pace, Tyler Drinkard, Joe Armata and Trevor Wilkins had two apiece.
Neumann's final game against Ramapo on Sunday has been postponed to due snow in South Carolina. The Knights travel to Washington College and Virginia Wesleyan College next weekend for more non-conference action.
