Men's Basketball Wins in Overtime on Blounts Dunk With Two Seconds Left

 ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University men's basketball team won an overtime thriller 74-71 in the Colonial States Athletic Conference CSAC against Marywood University, Monday evening.

The Knights were down by one point 71-70 in the overtime period and scored with seven seconds remaining. In a mad scramble for the Knights to keep possession of the ball in the backcourt Rich Whitten threw the ball three-quarters the length of the court to Mark Blount to dunk the ball and give the Knights a 72-71 lead. He added a free throw to extend the lead 73-71. On the Pacers inbound play, Reggie Coleman pressured the Pacer player into losing possession of the ball out of bounds. Blount was fouled with 2 seconds remaining and hit one of two free throws and win 74-71.

The game went back and forth with in the first half with no team grabbing a lead any larger than five points throughout the first 20 minutes of play. The Knights walked into the halftime with a four point lead. There were five ties in the half and Whitten led the team with 10 first half points and TaVaune Griffin grabbed nine rebounds to cap the first half.

 The Knights took an eight point lead 43-35 on a Mel Weldon tip with 12:36 left in the game.

The Pacers answered with two-three pointers and a two point shot to tie the score at 43-43 at 10:32 mark.

The lead would change and the Knights had a one point lead in regulation 60-59 with 1:22 remaining. The Pacers hit one of two free throws to tie the score at 60-60. Whitten would have the last crack at getting a game winning shot. He received the ball out on the wing and drove the baseline with a finger roll hugging the inside of the rim before rolling out with two seconds left.

Neumann trailed the overtime period early, but Reggie Coleman shot a three pointer to tie the score at 65-65 and Whitten hit two free throws to extend the lead 67-65 before the fantastic finale.

The “Bigs” led the way for the Knights with Blount and Griffin getting double-doubles. Blount finished with 17 points, 15 rebounds and seven block shots and Griffin scored 12 points with 11 rebounds. Whitten dumped in 18 points and Dom Gibson scored 10 points.

The Knights (10-11, 9-5 CSAC) will travel to Marywood on Wednesday, February 6, slated for an 8 p.m. tip-off.
