Softball Falls to Cougars in Two

ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University softball team dropped two non-conference games to Misericordia University on Thursday afternoon. Game scores were 8-7 ad 9-5.

 

The teams opened the first game by trading runs in the first inning. The Knights then took a 2-1 lead with a run in the second inning.

 

In the fourth inning, Neumann plated five runs to take a 7-1 lead. With a bases clearing triple, Becca Reinhart set the career record for triples, currently with 12.

 

The Cougars capitalized on some Knights errors to score five runs to come within one, 7-6, in the fifth inning. Misericordia then scored two more unearned runs in the sixth inning to take the lead.

 

Lauren Wilkie started the game and went 4.2 innings. She allowed six runs, two earned, on eight hits. Mariah Ripken went 0.2 innings and took the loss. Kristin Beaty pitched the final 1.2 innings.

 

In game two, the Cougars jumped out to an 8-0 lead after the top of the third inning. The Knights scored a run in the third, two in the fourth and two in the fifth to make it a three-run game, 8-5. In the sixth, Neumann would get some base runners, but could not get the tying runs to cross the plate.

 

The Cougars added an insurance run in the seventh inning.

 

Danielle Grayson went 6.1 innings, allowing all nine runs, just five earned, and struck out four. Ripken and Beaty also pitched.

 

Neumann (20-12) hosts Immaculata in conference action on Saturday beginning at 1:00 PM.
