ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University baseball split with Gwynedd-Mercy College on Saturday afternoon in a Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) doubleheader. The Griffins won the first game 10-2. The Knights took game two 6-5.
In game one, the teams started the game by trading runs in the first inning. Gwynedd-Mercy then added two in the third, while Neumann plated one, for a 3-2 game.
The Griffins broke the game open with five runs in the fifth inning to take an 8-2 lead. The Knights looked to respond in the bottom of the fifth as Tyler Drinkard led off with a double, however he was stranded on second.
Russ Gilliam started the game and went 4+ innings. He allowed five runs, four earned, and struck out two. Ted Fletcher, Richard Llgas and Adrian LaRowe all came out of the bullpen.
In game two, the teams again traded runs, this time in the second inning. Neumann took the lead in the third inning when Buddy Elgin knocked in Will Flores. The Knights then added two runs in the fifth inning, both coming on wild pitches.
Neumann took advantage of a GMC error in the sixth and plated two runs for a 6-1 lead.
In the top of the seventh inning, the Griffins started a comeback attempt with three singles to start the inning. With two outs and the bases loaded, GMC hit a two-run single and then had a base runner tagged out at third to end the game and the comeback attempt.
Mike Dicken went 6.1 innings for his sixth win on the season. He allowed five runs, struck out six and did not walk a batter. Erik Klimoff got the final two outs for his fourth save of the season.
After the games, Neumann recognized its senior class: Marty Sessa, Will Flores, Dave Kalash, Jake Yarber, Kevin Joo, Russ Gilliam, Joey Armata, Bobby McCormick, Anthony LaCava, Bill Pace, Tyler Drinkard, Erik Klimoff, Matt Spillman, Mike Dicken, Brendan Melody and Joe Hastings.
With the split, the Knights finished conference play 13-5 overall and will be the No. 2 seed. Neumann will face Gwynedd-Mercy, the No. 3 seed, on Friday evening beginning at 5:30 PM.
Neumann (26-10) travels to Ramapo tomorrow afternoon for a non-conference single game beginning at 1 PM.
