ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University men's soccer team celebrated senior day with a 2-0 win over Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) rival Cabrini College on Saturday evening during homecoming festivities.
Before the game, Neumann recognized its three seniors: Vince Cortese, Brooks Skyers and Zach DiDonato. It was no ordinary day, in which the alumni from the men's soccer team came in droves in support of the three seniors. The lead up to the game was palpable and the alumni helped create that environment.
The first half served as an appetizer with both teams posturing themselves with defensive discipline and clever counters. The Knights were able to slow the game down and possess the play for the majority of the first half. But both goalkeepers certainly had a hand in keeping the game goal less, as each made fantastic acrobatic saves.
The second half began with a high tempo from both sides. The Knights were able to open up the game with their flank players Abu Donzo and DiDonato creating mayhem with dangerous services for Cabrini's back line.
In the 55th minute, Neumann was awarded a free kick 45 yards from goal off the left hand side of the field. Skyers stepped up and served a delightful ball into the Cavaliers penalty box. Donzo was running away from goal, but through divine intervention, headed the ball with great velocity across the goal mouth. Didonato was playing a "Harrison Ford" character, because of his scoring of late has served as "Clear and Present Danger" when his is around the opponents goal. With Donzo ripping a header across the goal mouth, it was only fitting that DiDonato whisked his way through the crowd and buried the shot from close range to take a 1-0 lead.
In the 70th minute, the Cabrini goalkeeper thwarted a Knights opportunity and the Knights would get a corner kick. Cabrini cleared their lines on the first corner only to give the Knight another corner. On this occasion, Skyers whipped in a little treasure that appeared to slip into the back of the net, only to have Vince Cortese come out of nowhere to claim the goal. Cortese left no margin for error and the Knights took a 2-0 lead that they never relinquished from that point on.
Devin Peterson entered the game soon after the first goal as he dazzled the crowd with box to box running and provided an advantage for the Knights with his ball winning presence. Jim McDowell proved to be a handful holding and distributing the ball as a forward with great effectiveness all game long. Tben Donnie, as well, invigorated high energy and this energizer bunny didn't stop going all game.
The Knights doubled-up up the Cavaliers in shots, 10-5 and then 6-2 on net. Dan Jones made the two saves needed for the shutout.
The Knights remain undefeated in conference play with four games left in the regular season.
"It was a good performance from our guys," said Coach Sloan. "I like our approach to the game and we possess a great amount of confidence, at the moment. We continue to realize that we are still evolving and that we are young. But, we are still looking to improve, as the postseason is right around the corner.
Neumann (5-8-1, 5-0 CSAC) hosts Rosemont on Wednesday as the push for placement in postseason continues. The conference match gets underway at 4:00 PM.
