UNION, N.J. – The Neumann University baseball team opened the 2014 season with a 4-3 loss in eight innings at No. 3 Kean University on Monday afternoon.
The teams traded runs in the third inning. Trevor Wilkins knocked in Alex DiGenova for the Knights first run. DiGenova then put Neumann up 2-1 in the fifth inning as he stole home. Matt Sheneman scored in the sixth inning on a strikeout, wild pitch, for a 3-1 lead.
Kean plated three runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 4-3 lead.
Kristian DeLuzio started the game and went 4.0 innings. He allowed one run on three hits. Ted Fletcher took the loss, going 1.2 innings and allowing three runs on two hits.
Alex Summers, Adam Holowienka, Adrian LaRowe and Jeremy Hutchison wrapped up the rest of the innings on the mound.
Neumann (0-1) will travel to Mary Washington University on Thursday afternoon. First pitch is slated for 2:00 PM.
**Game was called for darkness, one batter into the bottom of the 9th ... Neumann had taken a 5-4 lead with two runs in the top of the 9th, however rule 5.8 states that if a full inning cannot be completed, then the score reverts back to the last full inning played, giving Kean a 4-3 win.**
