ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University softball team dropped a pair of non-conference games to Widener University on Wednesday afternoon. Game scores were 8-5 and 4-0.
Seniors Becca Reinhart and Meredith Grady were recognized after the games.
In game one, the Knights put three runs on the board in the first inning for an early lead. Neumann loaded the bases without a hit. Becky Guinto knocked in two runs with on single. Megan Williams then hit an RBI single for the third run.
Widener put five runs on the board in the top of the second inning. The teams then traded runs back and forth. The Pride kept the Knights at arm's length. As Neumann would start the rally, Widener turned three double plays in the game to end the threat.
The Knights put the first two batters on in the bottom of the seventh, but the Pride turned their third double play to end the game.
Lauren Wilkie started the game and went 5.0 innings. She allowed six runs, four earned, on seven hits and struck out four. Allyson Parris pitched the final two innings.
In game two, the Knights could not get the bats going and committed errors that kept them out of the game. Neumann threatened in the fifth with the bases loaded, but Widener forced a groundout to end the inning.
The Pride scored a run in the third and then three in the fifth en route to the win.
Kristin Beaty started the game and went 5.0 innings. She allowed four runs, three earned, on seven hits. Haley Broomell pitched the sixth inning and struck out two. Melissa Rozumalski pitched the seventh inning and struck out one.
Neumann (22-8) will wrap up the regular season at Immaculata on Saturday. The conference doubleheader gets underway at 1:00 PM.
