ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University men's ice hockey defeated Salve Regina 3-1 on Saturday afternoon in non-conference action.
Ryan Luiten had a goal and an assist for the Knights.
Matt Gibney made 30 saves in net for the win. Neumann outshot Salve Regina 36-31.
The Seahawks got on the board first, late in the first period. While on the man-advantage, Salve Regina put the puck into the net with 43 seconds left before the first intermission.
The Knights would tie the game at one while shorthanded in the second period.
Mike Davis was able to wrist the puck into the net. Luiten and
Mikko Virtanen tallied the assists.
A few minutes later, Neumann thought it had taken a 2-1 lead off a shot from
Doug Rose, but no goal signal was made. At the next whistle, the officials gathered and declared the puck did in fact go into the net. Rose was credited with his first goal of the season, the eventual game-winner, with 3:53 on the clock.
Connor Annett and
Brandon Gagne picked up the assists.
The Seahawks turned up the pressure in the third period, putting 16 shots on Gibney, but they could not break through. With the goalie pulled and a Knight in the penalty box, Luiten tallied an empty net goal for insurance.
Steve Low had the assist.
Neumann (2-0) heads to Elmira on Friday to open conference action beginning at 7:00 PM.
