ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University men's hockey team picked up a 5-3 win over Utica College on Friday evening in Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) West action.
Casey Rogers tallied a goal and an assist for the Knights.
Matt Gibney made 31 saves in net, including 14 in the third period alone.
Brandon Gagne put Neumann on the board midway through the first period. Rogers had the assist on the only goal of the period.
During a 37 second span in the second period, the two teams scored a total of three goals.
Mike Davis put the Knights up 2-0 at the 3:43 mark off assists from
Jory Mullin and
Shayne Morrissey. The Pioneers answered six seconds later for 2-1 game.
Shane Topf gave Neumann back the two-goal lead 31 seconds later.
Jake Davidson and
Nick Perruccio had the assists.
While the Knights were on a penalty kill, Zac Lazarro tipped the puck past the Pioneer goalie for a 4-1 Neumann lead with the shorthanded goal.
Utica started to attempt a comeback in the third period, scoring goals at the 7:46 and 10:03 marks. Neumann was able to kill two penalties as regulation was winding down to hold the 4-3 lead. Rogers then sealed the win with an empty net goal with 22 seconds left on the clock.
Neumann (4-2, 2-2 ECAC West) will host Nazareth tomorrow afternoon in conference action beginning at 4:00 PM.
