Box Score POTSDAM, N.Y. - The Neumann University women's ice hockey team defeated SUNY Potsdam for the second straight day, 4-3, on Saturday afternoon in ECAC West action.
For the second straight day, Megan Russelo scored two goals. Lauren Cusack picked up two assists. Chelsea Polidoro made 31 saves to help Neumann pick up the win.
Russelo gave the Knights a 1-0 lead with the first goal of the game at the 9:59 mark of the first period. Sarah Thon and Grace Klienbach picked up the assists. Neumann led 1-0 after the first period.
The Knights added three more goals in the second period to jump out to a 4-0 lead. Kelly Fox put the Knights up 2-0 with 3:39 into the period off an assist from Cusack. Casey Kilduff tallied the second goal while Cusack and Ashley Langdon tallied the assists. Russelo scored an unassisted shorthanded, her second of the night, with 9:53 left in the period.
The Bears spoiled the shutout bid with a goal at the 14:50 mark of the second for a 4-1 game.
Potsdam cut Neumann's lead to two early in third period. The Bears then netted a goal with 21 seconds remaining and the goalie pulled. Though Potsdam kept the goalie out, it could not score the game-tying goal like the night before and the Knights were able to hold off the Bears.
"This was a great character weekend for us as a program", said head coach Gina Kearns. "We were faced with much adversity and the team rose to the occasion. We had production from everyone in the lineup and both goaltenders."
Neumann (6-14-2, 4-11-1 ECAC West) head home to host Stevenson University in a non-conference match up on Tuesday. Face off is 7:00 PM as the Knights go for their fourth straight win.
