CHESTER, Pa. - The Neumann University baseball team scored five runs in the top of the ninth inning to defeat Widener University 12-9 on Tuesday afternoon in non-conference action.
Four Knights contributed with multiple hits. Buddy Elgin drove in four runs to go along with his two hits. Kye Williams score three times for the Knights.
Williams started the game off with a hit by pitch. He would score on an error in the top of the first. The Knights had five hits and two walks as they went on to score six runs in the top of the second to take a 7-0 lead. Elgin had a two-run double in the inning.
Widener would respond with four runs in the bottom of the second to cut the lead to three. The Pride would go on to score five more runs to take a 9-7 lead heading into the top of the ninth.
AJ Koscelansky led off the top of the ninth with a single. Jesus Lantigua reached base on a fielder's choice. With one out, Eric Bergman walked and Jarad Carney singled to load the bases. Williams was hit by a pitch to bring in the first run. Kevin Case followed with a two-run single for a 10-9 Knights lead. Elgin added two insurance runs with a two-run double.
Bobby Sefick went the first 5.1 innings. He allowed eight runs, five earned, on 13 hits. Jerome Cevetello pitched 0.2 scoreless innings in relief to finish of the sixth. Chris Rupprecht picked up his first win of the season in relief. He pitched 2.0 innings, allowing one unearned run on two hits. Kevin Corris got his second save of the season in a scoreless ninth inning.
Neumann (6-1) will open up their home schedule when they host Susquehanna on Thursday. First pitch is slated at 3:30 PM.
