Volleyball Battles Hard, but Drops 3-2 Match to Cabrini

ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University volleyball battled in a five set match against Cabrini College on Thursday evening, but fell 3-2 in the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) action. Set scores were 25-18, 25-20, 22-25, 23-25, 15-11.

Rachael Hoffmann hit .324 and finished with 17 kills. Anna Waltz had a double-double with 15 kills and 15 digs. Kat Wolf handed out 44 assists. Julia Malseed tallied 23 digs and Nikki Collevechio added 13.

The Knights started the match off by scoring the first three points. The Cavaliers answered with the next seven points for a 7-3 advantage. Cabrini was able to keep Neumann and arm's length and took the first set 25-18.

Neumann opened the second set by once again scoring the first three points. With the Knights holding a 7-5 lead, the Cavaliers scored the next five points for a 10-5 score. Kills by Malseed and Shayne Sullivan out Neumann to within one, 17-16, but again Cabrini answered and scored four points to take a 21-16 lead and take the second set 25-20.

The Knights did not give up, being down 2-0, and did not go quietly in set three. Late in the third set, the teams were knotted at 21. A kill by Hoffman put Neumann up 22-21. The Knights sealed the 25-22 third set win with another kill by Hoffman.

In set four, Neumann jumped out to a 5-1 lead. While holding a 14-9 advantage, Cabrini scored five straight points to knot the game at 14. The teams went back and forth, trading points. With the score 24-23 Neumann, Waltz notched a kill to send the match to set five.

The teams played to an early 4-4 game in the fifth set. The Cavaliers then took the next four points for an 8-4 score. Neumann got back to within two, 10-8, but Cabrini held on for the 15-11 win and 3-2 overall match win.

Neumann (7-8, 2-1 CSAC) will head to Frostburg State on Saturday for a tri-match with Lebanon Valley. Action is set to get underway at 12:00 PM.
