NEWPORT, R.I. - The Neumann University women's ice hockey team defeated Salve Regina University 3-2 in overtime on Friday evening to open 2016.

Jackie Schneider scored the game winner in the overtime session. The Knights were called for a penalty 1:59 into the extra five minutes. Schneider then scored just under a minute later for the shorthanded game-winner. Bek Lucas tallied the assist for the win.

Schneider and Lucas each finished with a goal and an assist. Justina Mayr made 28 saves in net.

Salve Regina opened the scoring at the 7:27 mark of the first period and took a 1-0 lead after 20 minutes.

Lauren Cusack tied the game at one at 8:38 if the second period on a backhanded shot. Casey Kilduff and Steph Grundy tallied the assists. The teams remained tied at one after two periods.

Two goals in the third period came in a 28 second span. The Seahawks took back the lead. Lucas answered 28 seconds later to knot the score at two off an assist from Schneider.

This set up Schneider to score the shrthanded game-winner in overtime.

"We started 2016 off the right way. The team came back fresh and we had a great week of practice and we carried that momentum into today," said head coach Gina Kearns. "We put together a solid 60 minutes against a good Salve team. Cusack started us off with a nice backhanded goal. Lucas had a great individual effort to tie the game in the third and Schneider with a hardnosed shorthanded goal to win it."

Neumann (2-9-1) will head to Salem State tomorrow afternoon for non-conference action beginning at 5:00 PM.
