ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University women's volleyball team picked up a pair of wins on the first day of the Knights Fall Classic on Friday evening. The Knights defeated both King's (Pa.) College and Washington (Md.) College 3-1.
In the first match against King's, the teams split the first two sets with Neumann winning the first set 25-19 and King's winning the second set 26-24. The Knights took a 2-1 advantage by winning the third set 25-22. As it looked like the Lady Monarchs were going to send the match to a fifth set, the Knights pulled away with a 26-24 win in the fourth set for the 3-1 win.
Rachael Hoffman led the Knights with 18 kills.
Melanie Malseed tallied 12 kills and
Shayne Sullivan added 11.
Rachel Cray handed out 49 assists.
Nikki Collevechio had 31 digs to anchor the defense and added five service aces.
Hayley Glah had 12 and
Ali Frey added 10.
Against Washington, Neumann took the first two sets, 25-22, 25-11, for an early lead. The Shorewomen took set three 25-16 to force a fourth match. The Knights took the fourth set 25-19 for the match.
Hoffmann tallied 13 kills and four block solos. Malseed added 10 kills. Cray dished out 36 assists.
Carlee Herrin and Cray head had 17 digs and Collevechio added 16.
Neumann (10-11) will continue the Fall Classic tomorrow with two matches. The Knights will face St. Mary's (Minn.) at 10:00 AM and Scranton at 2:00 PM.
