ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University men's ice hockey team picked up a thrilling 5-4 overtime victory over conference rival Elmira College on Friday evening.
Five different Knights scored in the come from behind win, including
Joe Mitchell,
Shane Topf,
Ryan Luiten,
Jake Davidson and
Lauri Viitanen.
Matt Gibney made 24 saves in net for Neumann in the win.
Elmira would strike first just 56 seconds into the game to take a 1-0 lead. The Knights would not be fazed by the early goal however, and began taking play to the Soaring Eagles for much of the opening period. Neumann would finally be rewarded with just six seconds left in the opening stanza, as Mitchell tucked home a rebound of a
Liam Board shot to tie the game at 1-1 heading into the second period. Shots in the first period would finish 18-11 in favor of the Knights.
Neumann could not continue its momentum into the second frame, as the Soaring Eagles notched the period's only two goals. Despite outshooting Elmira by a count of 15-6 in the period, the Knights would find themselves trailing 3-1 headed to the third.
Things would only get worse for Neumann at the start of the third, as Elmira notched a fourth goal at the 5:54 mark of the period. Just when it looked as if the game was finished though, the Knights found their way back into the game. Topf gave the Knights life with just over ten minutes to play, as he found the back of the net to make it 4-2. Just five minutes later, Neumann continued to chip away and found a third goal as Luiten banged home a loose puck to make it 4-3.
Elmira would defend well over the last five minutes of play and the Soaring Eagles looked to have the game salted away in the final minute. Neumann would take a timeout with 34 seconds left, pulling its goalie for an extra attacker looking for the tying goal. Elmira would fend off a furious Knights attack by clearing the puck into the Neumann end, but with just seconds left to play the Knights found a way to get the game tied as Luiten worked more magic. After taking a pass at the Elmira blue-line from
Jory Mullin, Luiten danced around an Elmira defender with under five seconds left and put a backhand saucer pass directly on the tape of a streaking Davidson, who fired home the equalizer as time expired to send the crowd into a frenzy.
The game would head to overtime and Neumann would waste no time capping off the fantastic comeback. Just a minute and 43 seconds into the extra session Viitanen rifled home the winner off a nice feed from his defense partner
Sam House to seal the win for the Knights 5-4.
Neumann (3-2, 1-2 ECAC West) is right back in action tomorrow night as it hosts Hobart College in another ECAC West matchup. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
