CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Neumann University women's ice hockey team used solid play on special teams and a 60 minute effort to grit out a tough 4-3 road win at SUNY Cortland on Saturday night.
Bek Lucas notched two goals for Neumann to go along with goals from Jordan Cholish and
Jackie Schneider. Goalie
Julia Fair made 20 saves for the Knights to pick up the win.
The Knights would open the scoring just over six minutes into the first period, as the team took advantage of a power play to take the 1-0 lead. Schneider would find the back of the net off assists from
Sammy Patrick and
Kelly Fox to get the Knights out in front. The lead would be short-lived though, as Cortland answered with two goals late in the period to take a 2-1 lead into the first intermission.
Undaunted by losing the early lead, Neumann would respond early in the second period as Lucas scored the first of her two goals to tie the game up at two. Despite outshooting the Red Dragons by a score of 11-7 in the period, the Knights would have to settle with the score being level heading into the third period.
Neumann would not waste any time in the third period staking its claim on the game. Just 21 seconds into the period Lucas tallied her second goal of the game off of assists from
Grace Klienbach and
Kate Blad to give the Knights a lead they would not relinquish. Cholish would add an insurance tally midway through the period with the team's second power play goal of the night to give the team a 4-2 lead. Neumann would end up needing the fourth goal, as Cortland notched a third goal with under a minute left to play to make things interesting in the final seconds. The goal would be too little, too late though as the Knights would skate away with their first conference win by a score of 4-3.
Neumann (2-5, 1-4 ECAC West) will face-off against Cortland again tomorrow looking for its second win in as many days. Puck-drop is scheduled for 2:00 PM.
