Box Score WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - The Neumann University baseball team used a 14 hit effort to knock off St. John Fisher College 9-7 Wednesday afternoon on its spring break trip in Florida.
Sophomore
Cody MacNair tallied five hits in the effort to lead the offense.
Eric Bergman added four hits of his own in the win.
The Knights got on the board early, using a leadoff double by
Chuck Trentler to bring the offense to life. Trentler was bunted to third, and came in toscoreon an
AJ Koscelansky ground ball to the right side of the infield. With one out in the inning, MacNair and
Kye Williams reached base safely on an error and a base hit respectively, and were plated on a Bergman triple to right center field.
Neumann went silent on offense for the next two at bats, but were able to manage a run in the top of the fourth inning when
Spencer Young pulled an inside fastball down the third base line for a double, driving in designated hitter
Kelvin Ortiz.
The teams traded runs in the fourth and fifth with the Cardinals getting on the boardin the bottom of the fourth inning using a leadoff single and sacrifice fly to bring in their first run of the game.
MacNair again got on base with a leadoff single in the fifth inning, advancing to third on two passed balls. Bergman used his second hit of the day to drive in MacNair and lengthenthe Neumann lead to 5-1.
With the score 7-2 heading into the top of the ninth inning, a Trentler leadoff walk and a MacNair triple ended up being the difference in the game. MacNair was then plated on a Williams single to improve the Knights' advantage to 9-2 heading into the bottom of the ninth.
The Cardinals were not prepared to go without a fight, using a late surge to score five runs in the bottom of the ninth inning. With two outs in the inning and the bases empty, a lazy pop up to first baseman
Joe Nepi secured the 9-7 victory for the Knights.
Zach Cooney earned his first win in a Neumann uniform on the mound. Cooney controlled the St. John Fisher offense over five innings, surrendering four hits and two runs while striking out four.
Chris Rupprecht came on in the sixth and seventh innings tallying four strikeouts and allowing no runs.
Bobby Sefick contributed one inningof relief, and
Tyler Thomas got an out on the mound.
Zach Youngberg was called to the mound in the ninth andslammed the door to earnthe two out save.
Neumann (2-3) sees action again tomorrow against Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. First pitch is set for 12:00 PM.
