NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Neumann University baseball team fell in the ninth inning to No. 24 Christopher Newport University on Saturday afternoon to conclude its spring break trip.
Kye Williams and
Curt Yenchik each had two hits in the game.
Kristian DeLuzio went 8+ innings and took the loss. He allowed three runs, just one earned, on six hits and struck out eight. The senior didn't allow a hit until the fifth inning.
The Knights plated an unearned run in the top of the fifth inning. Yenchik led off the inning with a single. He then changed places with
Jonathan DelValle on a fielder's choice. With two outs,
Chuck Trentler reached on an error and DelValle scored.
Neumann took a 2-0 lead with a run in the top of the sixth.
AJ Koscelansky led off with a double and came around to score on a single by Williams. The Captains cut the score to 2-1 with a run in the bottom of the sixth.
The Knights took the 2-1 lead into the bottom of the ninth inning. The Captains first batter reached on an error by the third baseman. The next batter attempted to sacrifice the runner from second to third, and ended up reaching base with a single. He moved to third when the throw went into right field and the tying run. The next batter hit a single into left field to give Christopher Newport the come-from-behind win on two unearned runs.
Neumann (3-6) will travel to Salisbury on Tuesday afternoon for a single non-conference game.
