ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University baseball team defeated Cairn University in both games of a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon in Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) action by scores of 6-3 in both games.
In game one,
Kye Williams had three hits, including a two-run homerun, and scored two runs.
Cody MacNair also had three hits and batted in a pair of runs.
Chuck Trentler had a two-run double.
Jalen Burks started on the mound and pitched 1.2 innings. He allowed three runs on five hits and struck out one.
Zach Cooney pitched 5.1 scoreless innings in relief. He allowed one hit and struck out seven to earn his second win.
Cairn put three runs on the board in the first. The Knights took advantage of an error in the fourth and
Eric Bergman scored on an RBI double by MacNair to make it 3-1. MacNair added another run in the fifth with a single through the right side to bring home Williams.
The Knights erupted for four runs in the sixth.
Jonathan DelValle led off the inning with a walk.
Kyle Weller reached on a fielder's choice and DelValle advanced to third on a throwing error. Trentler doubled to left center to drive in two runs. Williams smacked a two-run homerun to left to give the Knights a 6-3 lead and seal the win.
In game two, MacNair led the Knights with three hits and two RBI. DelValle, Trentler and Williams each had a pair of hits.
AJ Koscelansky had a hit, one RBI, and two runs scored.
Pat O'Leary started on the mound and pitched 3.1 innings. He allowed three runs, two earned, on four hits and struck out four.
Chris Rupprecht pitched 2.2 scoreless innings in relief to pick up his third win.
Zach Youngberg pitched a scoreless seventh to earn his second save.
The Highlanders added a run in the first and second to take a 2-0 lead. The Knights answered back in the second with two runs. DelValle singled to left to score Koscelansky and Weller scored on a fielder's choice by
Sam Banks.
Cairn added a run in the third, but the Knights answered with two runs of their own. Koscelansky singled through the right side to score Bergman. On the next play, DelValle singled to shortstop and Koscelansky advanced to third. Koscelansky would score as a result of a throwing error on the play.
With the Knights leading 4-3, MacNair doubled in the fourth to score Williams and make it 5-3. In the sixth, MacNair singled and advanced to second on the throw, which brought home Trentler for the 6-3 final.
Neumann (15-14, 8-4 CSAC) will host Montclair State University on Tuesday. First pitch is at 3:30 PM.
