IMMACULATA, Pa. – The Neumann University baseball team won a back and forth battle with Immaculata University, 4-3, in a first round game of the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) playoffs on Thursday afternoon.
The Mighty Macs opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning. The Knights tied the game at one in the top of the third inning. With one out,
Tyler Thomas drew a walk. He came around to score on a single by
Chuck Trentler. Immaculata answered with a run in the bottom of the third to take back the lead, where the teams stayed until the eighth inning.
The Knights took advantage of a Mighty Mac error in the eighth inning to take a 3-2 lead.
Joey Pedorenko led off the inning with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Trentler.
Kye Williams then walked for runners on first and second with one out. Immaculata's pitcher threw over to first to try and pick-off Williams, but threw the ball down the right field line. Pedorenko came around from second to score on the error and Williams went to second. Williams scored on a single by
Cody MacNair.
The Mighty Macs answered with a run on a groundout in the bottom of the eighth for a 3-3 game going into the ninth.
Curt Yenchik was hit by a pitch to start the ninth inning.
Matt McLaughlin came into pinch run, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by
Kyle Weller and then moved to third on a wild pitch. The Knights executed a suicide squeeze as Thomas laid down a perfect bunt. McLaughlin scored the go-ahead and eventual game-winning run and Thomas reached first on the bunt base hit.
The Knights sent the Mighty Macs down in order in the bottom of the ninth to seal the win.
Kristian DeLuzio started the game and went 7+ innings. He allowed three runs on six hits and struck out a pair.
Zach Youngberg went 0.2 innings.
Chris Rupprecht went the final 1.1 innings, did not allow a hit, for the win as he improves to 5-0.
Neumann (20-17) will face Keystone College tomorrow at 10:30 AM in a CSAC semifinal game. The outcome of the game will determine the rest of the weekend's schedule.
