TOWSON, Md. – The Neumann University field hockey team started out its season in style, scoring a 3-2 win in overtime on the road at Goucher College.
Neumann opened the scoring fifteen minutes into the match, as sophomore forward
Julia Mustin found the back of the net off a pass from fellow sophomore
Chelsea Kulesza. The Knights would continue to push forward in the attack in the first half, and were rewarded nine minutes later as senior
Jessica Harrell scored to make it 2-0. The two goal lead would be short-lived however, as Goucher responded just under three minutes later to make the game 2-1. As the first half came to an end, both teams were level with six shots apiece.
The second half continued to be a tightly contested affair. Goalie
Caitlyn Johnson was busy for the Knights in the second period, making six of her nine saves in the stanza. Neumann held on to their one goal lead up until the 56
thminute of the game, when Goucher leveled the game up at two.
The game would head to overtime and continued to be a back and forth affair. In the overtime session, Neumann would register five shots to Goucher's four. The fifth Knight's shot proved to be the difference maker though, as Harrell scored her second goal of the game to seal the win for Neumann.
Head coach
Sarah Kurpel was very happy with the team's performance on the day. "I really like the way the team has come together over the past few weeks. We were explosive today and did some fantastic things on both the attack and on defense. I'm really excited about the direction this team is going and can't wait to see what we can do moving forward."
Neumann (1-0) returns home on Saturday for the team's home opener against Delaware Valley University. The start time for the game is scheduled for 11:00 AM.
