ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University field hockey team opened its home schedule with a 4-2 win over Delaware Valley University. The win is the team's second consecutive victory to start the 2016 season.
The game did not start as planned as Delaware Valley scored the first goal of the match just under ten minutes in. Despite numerous shots by Neumann, the game remained tied until late in the first half. The Knight's breakthrough came in the 26
th minute as forward
Julia Mustin fired home a rebound off her own initial saved shot to tie the game at 1-1. The game would head into halftime still tied at one, with the Knights holding an 11-5 edge in shots.
The second half began with chances coming from both teams. In the 42
nd minute, a goal was called off for Delaware Valley and just one minute later the Knights found the back of the net to take a 2-1 lead.
Chelsea Kulesza finished off an excellent feed from
Jessica Harrell for the tally. The lead would be short-lived however, as the Aggies answered back with an equalizing goal just five minutes later to tie the game at two.
The game would turn with fifteen minutes remaining in the match. Harrell found
Colleen Hoy in front of the net and the sophomore forward made no mistake, putting the ball in the back of the cage to make it 3-2 Neumann. The Knights would not look back from there, adding a fourth goal late in the match as Mustin scored her second goal of the game on yet another pass from Harrell, who registered her third assist of the day.
Neumann closed out the match with a 19-8 advantage in shots. Goalie
Caitlyn Johnson finished the day with two saves for her second win in as many games.
Neumann (2-0) will return to the field on Friday, September 9
th as it hosts Widener University at 4:00 PM.
