CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Neumann University volleyball team split a pair of matches at the Pacific Coast Classic to open the 2016 season. The Knights fell to St. John Fisher 3-0 (25-20, 27-25, 25-19) before defeating Northland 3-0 (25-12, 25-14, 26-24).
Hayley Glah led the Knights in her first collegiate match with 13 kills.
Rachel Cray handed out 22 assists to open her collegiate career.
Nikki Collevechio had 10 digs on the defensive side.
St. John Fisher started the match with six straight kills. With the Cardinals holding a 14-4 lead, the Knights scored the next eight points to get to within two, 14-12. With a one point lead, 20-19, the Cardinals finished the set on a 5-1 run to take a 1-0 lead.
The second set remained close the entire time, with the largest lead just three throughout. With St. John Fisher leading 24-21, the Knights tallied three straight points to tie the set at 24. However, the Cardinals were able to come away with the 27-25 win to take a 2-0 lead.
In the third set, and the teams tied at seven, the Cardinals scored the next seven points to pad their lead and come away with the 25-19 win to take the match.
Against Northlalnd,
Shayne Sullivan led the Knights with eight kills while
Melanie Malseed added seven and Glah six. Cray handed out 24 assists. Collevechio added another 10 digs.
Neumann (1-1) will face Chapman College and the University of a Verne on Saturday to wrap up the Pacific Coast Classic. The matches get underway at 4:30 and 6:30 PM.
