ASTON, Pa. – Through its first two games of the season, the Neumann University field hockey team has seen its fair share of close games. For the first time though, the Knights ended up on the wrong side of the equation, losing a heartbreaker in overtime 4-3 to Widener University.
Julia Mustin was able to find the back of the net twice in the loss.
Caitlyn Johnson made two saves in net.
Full of confidence from an unblemished record to begin the season, Neumann started the game very strongly. The Knights generated three shots and four penalty corners in the game's first seven minutes but couldn't solve the Widener goalie. The Pride would eventually settle into the game and broke the scoreless draw in the 23
rd minute.
Neumann wasted no time responding back though, as forward Mustin notched her fourth goal of the season on a fast break to tie the game at one. The game would head to halftime still tied, with the Knights holding a 7-5 edge in shots.
The second half proved to be a rollercoaster of emotions for both teams. Early in the half, senior
Becky Guinto found the back of the cage to give the Knights their first lead of the game, 2-1. Moments later, Neumann had an opportunity to take a stranglehold on the match as they were granted a penalty stroke. Unfortunately for the Knights, the ensuing stroke went just wide, keeping the team's lead at just one goal.
Seven minutes later, Widener made the Knights pay, answering back with a goal to tie the game at two. As the game wound down inside ten minutes, Neumann continued their recent trend of scoring late goals. With just fewer than seven minutes remaining, Mustin banged home a loose ball in front of the net to put the Knights back out in front 3-2. The game looked to be salted away, before Widener scored to re-tie the game for the third time off of a penalty corner with 1:30 left in regulation.
The game would head to overtime, but would not need much time to be decided. The Pride continued pushing forward with their momentum from late in regulation and scored just under four minutes into overtime to seal up a 4-3 road victory.
With the loss, the Knights fall to 2-1 on the season. The team will not have to wait long to get back out on the field, as they will play host to Virginia Wesleyan this Sunday, September 11
th at noon.
