BEVERLY, Mass. – The Neumann University men's ice hockey team made a valiant third period comeback to battle back for a 3-3 tie in the consolation game of the Endicott Holiday Invitational versus Tufts University.
Senior forward
Jory Mullin was once again the hero for Neumann, scoring two third period goals to get the game tied after the Knights fell behind by three goals early. The goals were his 18
th and 19
th tallies of the season, further boosting his stats as the nation's top scorer.
Matt Gerber registered the other Neumann goal, while
Anthony Pupplo made 33 saves in net on the day.
The start of the game would follow a familiar script to yesterday's game for Neumann as the Knights fell behind early, conceding a goal just 1:26 into the contest. Neumann has now given up the game's first goal in five of its last six contests, all of them coming in the opening five minutes of the period. Tufts would tack on two more tallies to head to the first intermission up 3-0 over the Knights.
Neumann would look to get back into the game in the second stanza, but could not solve the Jumbos goaltender. Despite holding a 26-21 edge in shots over the game's first two periods, the Knights would continue to trail 3-0 heading to the third.
Undaunted by the three goal third period deficit, the Knights would continue to generate chances in the Tufts end and would finally find a breakthrough in the opening minutes of the final period. Gerber scored just 2:18 into the period off a nice feed from
Shane Topf to bring Neumann back within two goals. From there, Mullin took over the game. With the Knights on the penalty kill midway through the period, he scored shorthanded to bring Neumann back within a goal. The senior forward was not done there though, as he also registered the game-tying goal with under four minutes left to play to send the game to overtime.
In the extra session neither team would find the back of the net. Neumann held a 3-1 edge in shots in the extra frame, but would have to settle for a tie. Shots for the game would finish 49-36 in favor of the Knights.
Neumann (10-4-2) will look to get back in the win column next weekend as they travel to Morrisville State College for a non-conference game. Puck-drop is scheduled for 4:00 PM.
