ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University men's basketball team opened Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) action with an 84-71 win over Marywood University on Tuesday evening.
Aaron Johnson-Chavis led four Knights in double-digits with 22 points. The freshman also added eight boards and four blocks.
Tyaire Hudson added 19 points and nine rebounds.
Kawaun Chavis netted 14 points and
Jaquan Johnson added 12.
The Pacers used the three-pointer to jump out to an early lead over the Knights as the teams went back and forth. Marywood built an eight point advantage, 18-10, midway through the half. Neumann netted the next six points to get to within two. The Pacers then worked their way to their largest lead of the game, 28-18, with 6:38 left in the half. A lay-up by Johnson-Chavis started the comeback for the Knights. Neumann ended the half on a 12-2 run and tied the game at 30 on a layup by Hudson. Chavis then put the Knights up by two with 1:03 left before halftime and Neumann took the slim lead into the break.
With 17:10 on the clock in the second half, the Pacers hit a three for a one-point game, 38-37. The Knights then went on a 13-2 run for a 51-39 score. Marywood got back to within three with one of its nine three-pointers, 58-55, with 8:10 on the clock. The Knights would hit back-to-back layups by Hudson and
Raquan Brown-Johnson before the Pacers hit yet another three. Neumann continued to slowly increase its lead and not let Marywood get the key bucket to get back in the game. A free-throw by
Billy Cassidy with a minute left put the Knights up by double-digits. Neumann went 8-for 10 from the free-throw line to end the Pacers come-back attempt.
Neumann (3-0, 1-0 CSAC) will head on the road for the first time this weekend when it heads to Rowan for non-conference action. Tip-off is slated for 2:00 PM.
