Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Men's Hockey Opens UCHC Play With a Win

ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University men's ice hockey team picked up its first win of the season in its first ever United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) contest on Friday evening with a 3-1 win over Chatham University.

Liam Board factored in on each of Neumann's goals, scoring two goals and adding an assist. Jake Davidson and Joe Mitchell each tallied two assists, while goalie Sammy Bernard made 23 saves in net to pick up the win.

Neumann took the play to the Cougars early, registering the game's first seven shots on goal to establish some early momentum. That momentum paid off midway through the period, as Ryan Swain took a nice pass from Board and snapped a puck past the Chatham net-minder to give the Knights an early 1-0 lead. The one goal advantage would not last long though, as the Cougars fought back late in the period to tie the game on the power play at the 16:06 mark of the period. The game headed to the first intermission tied at 1-1, with the Knights holding a 15-5 edge in shots on goal.

The second period would see the Knights take control of the game. With Neumann on another penalty kill early in the period, Board raced in behind the Cougar defense on a short-handed breakaway and wristed a puck past the Chatham goalie's glove to give the Knights a 2-1 lead. The senior forward then doubled Neumann's lead late in the period, deflecting a point shot from Mitchell on a power play to extend the lead to 3-1 heading to the third and final period of play.

Keeping its foot on the pedal, Neumann played a majority of the third period in the visitors end, outshooting the Cougars by a count of 19-7 in the final frame. The Chatham goaltender was able to keep the Knights off the board in the period, but the Cougars attack stalled and Neumann skated away with the 3-1 win.

Neumann (1-2, 1-0 UCHC) is right back in action tomorrow for a home matchup with UCHC rival Lebanon Valley College. Opening face-off is scheduled for 4:00 PM.
