Women's Hockey Picks Up First Win

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Neumann University women's ice hockey team notched its first win of the season Friday night, with a 5-0 win over King's College in the first game of the Commonwealth Cup hosted by Chatham University.

Bek Lucas carried the Knights offense with a three point night (2 g, 1 a). Jackie Schneider chipped in with a goal and an assist, while Emma Paton notched a pair of assists. Helen Cooney picked up the shutout win in goal, stopping 19 shots.

Neumann would jump out to a quick start, tallying a pair of first period goals to get out to an early 2-0 lead. Angeline Taiariol got the scoring started, tapping in a loose puck in the crease at the 11:36 mark of the opening period of play. Excellent puck movement from the defense pair of Paton and Mollie Johnson led to a point shot from Paton that was deflected by Zoe Harkins to a wide open Taiariol for the opening score. The top line of Lucas, Schneider and Katelyn Brown continued their torrid start later in the period as the trio combined on the Knights' second goal of the night to put the Knights up by a pair heading to the first intermission.

The Knights were held scoreless in the second stanza, but would open the game wide open in the third period of play. Using excellent defensive puck movement, Neumann generated numerous quality opportunities from the point in the period. Goals from Lucas, Schneider and Johnson capped off the scoring for Neumann, who outshot King's by a count of 53-19.

Neumann (1-1-1) returns to action tomorrow at 4:30 PM when it takes on tournament host Chatham University in the Commonwealth Cup Championship.
