Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Women's Ice Hockey Upended by William Smith

ASTON, Pa. - The Neumann University women's ice hockey team fell in United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) play to William Smith College by a score of 4-1 on Saturday afternoon.

Bek Lucas added to her team leading goal total, registering Neumann's lone goal of the game for her 14th tally of the season. Helen Cooney was strong in goal, making 23 saves in the loss.

Much like Friday night's game, Saturday's matchup would be tightly contested throughout. The opening period saw the Herons jump out to an early lead, scoring 6:28 into the period to take a 1-0 lead. Neumann would respond right back though, scoring under a minute later via Lucas' 14th goal of the season to get the game tied up. Sammy Patrick found Lucas low in the offensive zone and the senior forward snuck the puck through the Heron net-minder's five-hole to make it 1-1 heading to the second stanza.

William Smith edged in front in the second, outshooting the Knights 13-9 in the frame and scoring the period's lone goal. The game looked to be headed to the third tied at one, but a Heron's goal with just 32 seconds left sent the game to intermission 2-1 in favor of the visitors.

Neumann would have its chances to tie the contest up in the final period of play, but could not find an equalizer. The Knights earned two third period power plays, but a tough William Smith penalty kill kept Neumann off the board and sealed the win with a short-handed goal at 14:06. The Herons tacked on an empty-netter in the final minute of play and skated away with the 4-1 road win.

Neumann (5-4-2, 3-2-1 UCHC) is now off for the remainder of the month for the holiday break before returning to the ice January 6th for a matchup versus Stevenson University. Puck-drop is scheduled for 5:30 PM.
