ELMIRA, N.Y. - The Neumann University men's ice hockey team picked up a much needed two points in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) West standings with a 5-1 win at Elmira College on Friday night.
Â
Jory Mullin added to his team scoring lead, carrying the Knights with a pair of goals, including the 50th of his career, and an assist.
Ryan Luiten,
Shayne Morrissey and
Shane Topf all tallied a goal and an assist, while
Nick Perruccio tacked on a pair of assists as well.
Anthony Pupplo was stellar in goal for Neumann, making 27 saves on 28 shots.
Â
Elmira would carry play early in the game, scoring the game's first goal on a power play just over eight minutes into the contest. Despite the early deficit, Neumann would battle back in the period. Using a power play of their own, the Knights would level up the score at one apiece at the 16:14 mark, as Mullin found the back of the net off a nice feed from Luiten. Using the momentum gained from the tying goal, Neumann would score again on the very next shift. Topf tallied just 42 seconds later to give the Knights a 2-1 lead headed to the first intermission.
Â
The second stanza would be all Neumann. Using solid team defense and some timely scoring, the Knights would score the only two goals of the period and limit the Soaring Eagles to just five shots on goal in the frame. Luiten would notch Neumann's second power play goal of the game at the 12:02 mark, followed by Mullin's second goal of the game with just over four minutes left in the period. The Knights would take a 4-1 lead into the second intermission, outshooting Elmira by a count of 24-16.
Â
The Soaring Eagles would apply some pressure in the Neumann end in the third period, but Pupplo stood tall and kept the three goal lead intact. Morrissey would tack on a fifth Knights goal eight minutes into the period, and Neumann would skate away with a 5-1 road win. Shots would finish 34-26 in favor of the Knights.
Â
Neumann (14-7-2, 5-6 ECAC West) is right back in action tomorrow afternoon, as it heads to Hobart College. Puck-drop for the ECAC West matchup is scheduled for 4:00 PM.
