ASTON, Pa. - The Neumann University men's ice hockey team heads to Nazareth College for an Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) West first round matchup versus the Golden Flyers on Wednesday evening.
Neumann is the No. 5 seed heading into the postseason after finishing the regular season with a record of 15-7-3 overall and 7-6-1 in the ECAC West. Nazareth (9-14-2, 8-6 ECAC West) finished a point ahead of the Knights in the league standings for the No. 4 seed.
The Knights and Golden Flyers split the regular season series, with each team coming away with a win on their on home ice. Nazareth skated away with a narrow 4-3 win in Rochester on November 5
th.
Ryan Luiten scored a pair of goals in the game. Neumann won a convincing 6-1 game in Aston on January 28th.
Jory Mullin netted a hat trick while
Matt Zendejas added a pair of goals.
The road matchup will be nothing new for Neumann, as the team has played 18 of its 25 games away from home. In those 18 road and neutral site games the team has registered an impressive 11-5-2 record.
The Knights have been powered all season by one of the nation's top offenses. Neumann averages 4.44 goals per game, good for sixth in the country. The Knights attack has been led by the trio of Mullin,
Shayne Morrissey and
Liam Board. Mullin leads the country in goals with 26 and is second in the nation with 44 points. The forward is also tied for the national lead in shorthanded goals with five. Morrissey and Board have each tallied 24 assists, good for a tie for ninth in the country.
Luiten and
Shane Topf have also provided a scoring punch for the Knights. Luiten ranks tied for third in the country with nine power play goals (14 total), while Topf has recorded 15 goals of his own.
Defensively, goaltender
Anthony Pupplo has emerged as one of the country's top net-minders. The freshman has registered a 10-1-2 record between the pipes to go along with a .942 save percentage and 1.94 goals against average. His save percentage ranks fourth nationally amongst qualifying goalies.
The winner of this quarterfinal matchup will move on to the semifinals on Saturday. The semifinal games will take place at top seeded Utica College and No. 2 seeded Manhattanville College. Puck-drop at Nazareth tomorrow evening is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
