WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The Neumann University baseball team dropped its first game 6-5 in an extra inning affair to Waynesburg University on Tuesday afternoon.
Evan Emerich,
Eric Bergman,
Curt Yenchik,
Kyle Weller and
Jon DelValle all had a pair of hits for the Knights. Emerich and DelValle each hit long balls.
Neumann used five pitches in the game.
Anthony Stricker started the game and went 4 innings. He allowed three runs, one earned, on five hits and struck out six.
Frank Angeloni pitched the next 2.2 innings.
Taylor Reynolds and
Zach Youngberg saw action out of the pen.
Jerome Cevetello took the loss, going 1.1 innings and allowed one run.
The Knights opened the scoring with a solo homerun by DelValle in the third inning. The Jackets put three runs on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning as they started the inning with the first batter reaching on a wild pitch after a strikeout.
In the top of the sixth,
Chuck Trentler led off with a double followed by a walk to Yenchik. With one out, Weller hit an RBI single to score Trentler.
Nick Panissidi followed with a double to score Yenchik and put runners on second and third. Weller came around to score on a passed ball and the Knights took a 4-3 lead.
Emerich hit his solo shot in the top of the seventh inning for a 6-4 Neumann lead. Waynesburg answered with two runs in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game.
The Jackets hit back-to-back one-out single in the bottom of the ninth to put two runners on base. With two outs, Waynesburg hit the game-winning single to take the game 6-5.
Neumann (2-1) is off tomorrow and will face Otterbein on Thursday. First-pitch is slated for 12:30 PM.
