Women's Lacrosse Wins Thriller in Double Overtime

ASTON, Pa. - The Neumann University women's lacrosse team bounced back from a loss on Tuesday with a thrilling 13-12 win over conference rival Immaculata University in double overtime on Thursday afternoon.

Kaitlyn Conrad was the difference maker on the afternoon for Neumann, scoring six goals including the game-winner. Shae Risley was also outstanding in the win, posting four goals and an assist. Diana Caicedo (2 goals) and Taylor Klever (1 goal) accounted for the other Knight tallies, while Gabby Curry stood tall in net, making 13 saves on the day.

The first half began just how the Knights drew it up, as Caicedo scored under a minute into the game to give Neumann an early lead. The advantage would be short lived however, as Immaculata responded with four goals in the next seven minutes to take a 4-1 lead at the 22:09 mark of the first half. Risley scored to make it 4-2 just a minute later, but the Mighty Macs again retaliated with three of the game's next four goals to make it 7-3 with just under 13 minutes left to play in the first frame.

Despite trailing by four goals, the Knights would not give up. Neumann answered back with three unanswered goals to end the first half. Two goals from Conrad and one from Risley got the Knights right back into the game with the score 7-6 in favor of Immaculata headed to halftime.

Any momentum Neumann gained at the end of the first period of play was washed away in the opening two minutes of the second stanza, as two Immaculata goals put the Knights back into a three goal hole at 9-6. Again undaunted by the deficit though, Neumann stormed back. The Knights found the back of the net five unanswered times in a span of ten minutes to retake the lead 11-9 with 17:30 left to play.

Showing resilience of their own, the Mighty Macs would not go quietly. The two teams traded goals midway through the half to make it 12-10 with 14:36 left to go, but Immaculata would tally twice in the game's final minutes of play to set up a sudden-death overtime showdown.

The first overtime was full of chances from both teams, but neither side could find the back of the net. Curry was at her best in the extra session, making a few tremendous saves to keep Neumann alive. The Knights had a great chance to end the game after an Immaculata yellow card put them on the man-advantage, but Neumann could not score and the game headed to a double overtime.

The Knights would finally breakthrough in the second overtime period. Conrad found a loose ball in the Immaculata end, weaved her way through several Mighty Mac defenders, and fired home the game winner to send the Neumann bench into jubilation.

Neumann (6-8, 5-2 CSAC) is off this weekend before returning to action next Tuesday, April 19th with a road game at Centenary University. Game-time is scheduled for 4:00 PM.
