ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University baseball team swept Cabrini University in a pair of Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) games on Saturday afternoon. The Knights won both games by 8-2 scores in the first meeting between the two teams.
In game one,
Chuck Trentler put Neumann on the board first with a solo homerun to lead off the second inning. With two outs in the third inning,
Evan Emerich knocked a solo shot to left field for a 2-0 lead.
Spencer Young followed with a single and came around to score on a double by
Cody MacNair for a 3-0 Neumann lead after three innings.
In the top of the fourth inning, the Cavaliers got a two-on, two-out single to put their two runs on the board. The Knights answered right back, took advantage of a Cavaliers error and sent 10 batters to the plate en route to five runs. With one out,
Duncan Balara singled and
Kyle Weller walked for two men on base.
Nick Panissidi doubled to knock in Balara. With two on and two outs, Cabrini committed an error and Weller and Panissidi scored. Neumann put two more runs on the board for an 8-2 game.
Zach Youngberg started the game and went 6.0 innings for the win. He allowed two runs on four hits and struck out five.
Matt Kelty pitched the seventh inning.
In game two, each team scored an unearned run in the first inning. Cabrini plated another run in the second inning for a 2-1 lead.
The Knights took back the momentum in the third inning. Young led the inning off with a double and switched places with MacNair to tie the game at two. Trentler walked and
Eric Bergman singled to load the bases. Balara stepped up to the plate and hit the ball to deep left center. All runners were off and Balara made his way around the bases for an in the park grand slam and a 6-2 Neumann lead. Trentler and Bergman scored again in the fourth inning for the 8-2 game.
Patrick Graham started the game and went 5.0 innings for the win. He allowed two runs, one earned, on six hits and struck out four.
Zach Cooney pitched two 1-2-3 innings in the sixth and seventh to seal the win and the sweep.
Neumann (13-12, 8-3 CSAC) and Cabrini will meet on Tuesday in the third game of the season series. First pitch is slate for 3:00 PM at Archbishop Carroll High School.
