MONTCLAIR, N.J. – The Neumann University baseball team traveled to Montclair State University on Wednesday afternoon and brought home an 8-7 win in the non-conference single game.
Spencer Young,
Kyle Weller and
Nick Panissidi, the six-seven-eight hole hitters, each knocked in a pair of runs.
James Angellella started the game, but could not get out of the first inning.
Taylor Reynolds picked up the win coming out of the pen, going 4.1 innings and allowed just one unearned run on four hits.
Ed Senlick and
Jerome Cevetello each saw time on the mound.
Kutter Endy went the final 1.2 innings for the save.
The Red Hawks jumped out early and scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning.
The Knights took advantage of a key defensive miscue and scored three runs in the third inning to cut the deficit to one.
Duncan Balara led off the inning with a single, followed by a walk by
Curt Yenchik. Young came to the plate and reached on an error and Balara came around to score. Weller hit a sacrifice fly to score Yenchik and Panissidi laid down a sacrifice bunt where Young came home.
Neumann took advantage of four straight walks in the fifth inning en route to scoring five runs. With one out,
Chuck Trentler,
Eric Bergman, Balara all walked to load the bases. Yenchik followed with his second walk of the game and Trentler came home to tie the game at four. Young came to the plate and knocked a two-run double to give the Knights the lead. Weller and Panissidi knocked in two more runs and Neumann took an 8-4 advantage.
Montclair State would get one run back in the sixth inning and plated two more in the seventh inning for an 8-7 score. The Red Hawks had their leadoff hitter of the ninth inning reach base and get sacrificed over to second. After an intentional walk, MSU grounded into a game-ending double play.
Neumann (15-12) gets back into conference action this weekend as it will face Immaculata in the season series. The single game will be at the Mighty Macs on Friday with the doubleheader coming in Aston on Saturday.
