Baseball Splits Doubleheader with Marywood

ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University baseball team split a pair of games with Marywood University in a Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) doubleheader on Sunday afternoon. The Pacers won game one 9-8 in eight innings. The Knights rebounded with a 10-8 win in game two.
 
In the first game, Duncan Balara went 4-for-5. Spencer Young had a homerun, knocked in three runs and scored two. Zach Cooney started the game and went 4.1 innings. He allowed six runs on seven hits and struck out four. Zach Youngberg took the loss in relief, going 3.2 innings. He allowed just one run on six hits and struck out a pair.
 
The game went back and forth. Both teams plated two runs in the second inning. Eric Bergman drove in both runs for the Knights to score Young and Jon DelValle.
 
The Pacers took a 3-2 lead in the top of the third inning. The Knights answered with three runs in the bottom of the third inning for a 5-3 game.
 
Marywood sent 10 men to the plate in the fifth inning and scored five runs to take an 8-5 advantage. The Pacers held the three run lead heading into the bottom of the seventh inning.
 
Balara led off the bottom of the seventh inning with a double. With one out, Young came to the plate and hit a two-run homerun to left field. DelValle then walked. With two outs, Bergman was hit by a pitch to put two runners on base. Cody MacNair singled to score DelValle to tie the game at eight and go into extra innings.
 
The Pacers scored a run in the top of the eighth. The Knights put two men on base in the bottom of the eighth inning, but could not get the tying run across the plate.
 
In the second game, Neumann jumped out an 8-0 lead after two and a half innings. Chuck Trentler hit a grand slam in the second inning and finished the game with five RBI.
 
The Pacers set the Knights' lead in half with four runs in the bottom of the third inning for an 8-4 game. Neumann added two more runs in the top of the fifth inning for a 10-4 game.
 
Marywood would not go quietly and scored a run in the fifth and three in the sixth inning for a 10-8 game.
 
Patrick Graham started the game and picked up the win. He went 5.0 innings and allowed five runs on eight hits. Kutter Endy went 0.2 innings. Bobby Sefick got the save, going 1.1 innings.
 
MacNair and Even Emerich each had four knocks in the game.
 
Neumann (7-9, 2-3 CSAC) and Marywood will meet tomorrow afternoon in the rubber match of the season series. First pitch is slated for 3:00 PM in Scranton.
