LA PLUME, Pa. – The Neumann University baseball team fell to Keystone College 7-6 in extra innings on Friday evening in Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) action.
Matt McLaughlin went 4-for-5 in the game.
Spencer Young and
Kyle Weller each had a pair of hits.
Zach Youngberg started the game and went 6.1 innings in the no decision. He allowed five runs, three earned, on eight hits.
Zach Cooney went 4.1 innings out of the pen and took the loss. He allowed two runs, one earned, on four hits and struck out three.
Neumann struck first in the third inning as it took advantage of a Keystone error to score two runs in the inning. The Giants answered with one run in the bottom of the third for a 2-1 game. The Knights scored two more runs in the fourth and the fifth innings for a 6-1 lead. Weller hit a two-run double in the fifth.
Keystone started to chip its way back into the game score scored two runs in the fifth, two unearned runs in the seventh and then tied the game at six in the eighth. Neither team would score in the ninth and the game went to extra innings.
The Knights put runners on the corners in the 10
th inning thanks to errors by the Giants, but could not get the runners home.
The Giants scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the 11
th as they capitalized on a Knights error. After the lead runner lined out, the next batter reached on an error and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. With one out, the next batter was intentionally walked to set up the double play, but the Giants answered with the game-winning single.
Neumann (16-15, 10-6 CSAC) and Keystone will meet again tomorrow afternoon for a doubleheader back in Aston. First pitch is slated for 12:00 PM.
