NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Neumann University women's volleyball team went 1-1 on the first day of the 2017 season at the Captains Classic on Friday evening.
In the first match, the Knights dropped a 3-0 decision to host Christopher Newport (25-17, 25-15, 25-14).
The 25 kills for the Knights were spread out evenly among six players.
Rachel Cray handed out 16 assists.
Melanie Malseed tallied 13 digs.
In the second match, Neumann came back from being down 0-2 to win the next three and take the match 3-2. Meredith won the first two sets, 25-23, 25-21. The next three sets all went to extra points. The Knights battled to a 27-25 and a 26-24 win to force a fifth set. Neumann took the fifth a deciding set 18-16.
Malseed led the Knights with 24 kills.
Hayley Glah,
Shayne Sullivan and
Rachael Hoffman each added nine kills. Cray dished out 46 assists.
Four Knights tallied double-digit digs in the match, led by
Bianca Harbold with 18. Cray notched 16, Malseed 15 and Kirsten Longeuira added 11.
Cray had the match-winning kill, off an assist from
Carlee Herrin.
Neumann (1-1) will face Christopher Newport and Meredith again tomorrow.
