Women's Volleyball Splits at Worthington Classic

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Neumann University women's volleyball team split a pair of non-conference matches on Saturday afternoon at the Worthington Classic hosted by Gallaudet University.

Neumann rebounded from a pair of defeats yesterday with a convincing 3-0 win over Nichols College in its first match. The Knights coasted to 25-11, 25-16 and 25-7 wins in Saturday's opener, taking the play to the Bison.

Rachael Hoffman was named to the All-Tournament team.

Melanie Malseed carried the Knights in the opening match of the day with nine kills, five aces and 10 digs. Hoffman led the team with 10 kills, while Carlee Herrin picked up 34 assists.

The second match of the day was a much closer affair for Neumann, as the Knights fell 3-2 to Montclair State. Neumann won the first set 25-20, before dropping sets two and three (25-21, 25-22). The Knights rebounded to tie the match with a dominant fourth set win (25-15), but could not close out the match in the fifth and deciding set, falling by a score of 15-8.

Hoffman was excellent for Neumann versus the Redhawks, racking up 18 kills to go along with five blocks. Shayne Sullivan and Bridget Lozier also had 10 kills for the Knights, while Herrin (42) and Malseed (21) again led the team in assists and digs.

Neumann (8-15, 3-1 CSAC) will get back into conference play next week, when it heads to Immaculata University on Tuesday, October 3rd. Game-time is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
