GWYNEDD VALLEY, Pa. – The Neumann University women's volleyball team defeated Gwynedd Mercy University 3-1 in Atlantic East Conference action on Tuesday evening.
The Knights won the first two sets by scores of 25-20 and 25-13. The Griffins won set three 25-21 to force a fourth set. Neumann took the match with a 25-20 fourth set win.
Melanie Malseed led the Knights with 19 kills and 14 digs. The junior had a .548 hitting percentage in the match.
Bre Hickey added 11 kills.
Alex Koppany handed out 27 assists and seven service aces.
Rachel Cray dished out 14.
Hayley Glah tallied 13 digs.
The Griffins scored the first three points of the match. The Knights came back and took a 6-4 lead. GMU answered and went up 10-6. Down 17-11, Neumann started to make its move and two kills by Malseed started 11 straight points for the Knights and a 22-17 lead. A kill by
Rachael Hoffman sealed the first set win.
In the second set, Neumann scored the first four points, including two service aces by Koppany. A kill by
Bridget Lozier sealed the second set win.
In the third set, the Knights were down 24-17 before scoring four straight points to try and come back for the straight set win, but the Griffins were able to get the 25
th point first.
The Knights tallied the first seven points and 11 of 13 to start the set. The Griffins chipped away at the lead and tied the game at 17. With a 20-19 lead, Neumann wrapped up the win by scoring five of the final six points of the contest.
Neumann (13-12, 4-1 Atlantic East) will host Bryn Mawr College tomorrow evening in non-conference action beginning at 7:00 PM.
