CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Neumann University women's ice hockey team dropped its second consecutive game on the road at SUNY Cortland on Saturday afternoon, falling by a score of 3-0.
Helen Cooney was excellent in goal for the Knights in the loss, making 41 saves.
Neumann hoped to pick up its first win of the 2018-19 season, but ran into a hungry Cortland team looking for its second win in as many days. The Red Dragons would dominate the first frame, outshooting the Knights by a count of 11-1 in the period. Cooney was at her best in the opening 20 minutes though, stopping all 11 shots she faced to keep the Knights in the game.
As the game moved to the second stanza, Cortland finally broke through. Cooney kept the hosts at bay for much of the period, but the Red Dragons scored twice in the final five minutes of the frame to take a 2-0 lead heading to the third.
The Knights fought hard to get back into the game in the third period, but Cortland proved to be too much. The Red Dragons tacked on a third tally with under three minutes left in the game and skated away with the comfortable 3-0 win.
Neumann (0-2) will return to the ice next Friday, November 2
nd for its home and UCHC opener versus rival Elmira College. Puck-drop is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
