APPLETON, Wisc. - The Neumann University men's ice hockey traveled west for the first of a two game series in Wisconsin this weekend with a tough 3-2 loss to host Lawrence University on Friday evening.
Â
Joe Mitchell and
Glenn Florczak scored Neumann's goals on the evening, while
Mike Cosentino made the start in goal, stopping 28 shots in the loss.
Â
The Knights started off their trek to the Midwest strongly, dominating the opening period of play and taking an early 1-0 lead over the Vikings. Mitchell was the beneficiary of a
Zac Boyle pass, scoring his first goal of the season to give Neumann a 1-0 lead after the first frame. The visitors out-shot Lawrence by a count of 13-8 in the period.
Â
Neumann could not keep its momentum rolling into the second stanza though, as Lawrence found its skating legs and began to take control of the game. The Vikings responded back with three unanswered goals in the frame to take a two goal lead heading to the third. The visitors again owned the shot advantage in the period (15-11), but trailed by two on the scoreboard.
Â
The Knights worked hard to get back in the game and got one goal back at the 11:40 mark from Florczak. A shot from the point from
Richie Brusco pin-balled around the Lawrence goal mouth and Florczak was there to bang home the loose puck to bring the score back to 3-2. Neumann continued to press forward for a tying goal, but despite numerous chances late in the period, the Knights could not even the score. The visitors would outshoot the Vikings by a count of 43-31 on the night, but could not make their chances count in the 3-2 loss.
Â
Neumann (0-6-2) gets right back to the rink in Wisconsin tomorrow for another non-conference road contest at defending national champion St. Norbert College. Puck-drop is scheduled for 5:00 PM (EST).
