GENEVA, N.Y. – The Neumann University women's ice hockey team dropped a United College Hockey Conference (UCHC) matchup on the road at William Smith College on Friday night, falling by a score of 4-0.
Helen Cooney played a strong game in goal for Neumann in the loss, picking up 39 saves on the evening.
The Herons took the play to the Knights from the opening whistle, out-shooting the visitors by a count of 14-2 in the opening frame. Lucky for Neumann, Cooney was at her best in the period, stopping all 14 shots to keep the Knights in the game as it headed to intermission scoreless.
William Smith broke the game wide open in the second stanza. The Herons finally put a puck past Cooney at the 4:44 mark, then tallied three more times in the period to take a comfortable 4-0 lead into the final period of play.
The Knights fought hard to get back into the contest in the third, but they could not solve the Heron goaltender as the game finished 4-0. Shots for the game finished 42-14 in favor of William Smith.
Neumann (1-7-0, 0-5-0 UCHC) will play the second of its two-game series at William Smith tomorrow. Puck-drop is slated for 2:00 PM.
