Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Men's Hockey Outmatched by Manhattanville

ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University men's ice hockey team fell in its final game before the holiday break on Friday evening, dropping a 7-3 result to United College Hockey Conference (UCHC) rival Manhattanville College.

Zac Boyle led the way for the Knights in the loss, scoring twice on the evening. Joe Mitchell (1 goal, 1 assist) and Glenn Florczak (2 assists) also each tallied two points, while Sammy Bernard and Mike Cosentino combined for 28 saves in net.

Manhattanville controlled play early in the game, registering 10 of the game's first 12 shots on goal in the opening 10 minutes. Despite the shot advantage, it would be the Knights that would break through with the game's first goal at the 14:13 mark of the period. An outstanding individual effort from Mitchell led to the goal after a rush from his own end. The senior forward outraced a Valiant defensemen through the neutral zone, gained the Manhattanville zone and rifled a laser of a shot to the top corner of the net to put Neumann up 1-0. Unfortunately for the Knights the lead would not last until intermission, as the Valiants tied the contest up at 1-1 in the final minute of the period.

Using momentum from the late first frame goal, Manhattanville scored just 2:55 into the second stanza to go up by a score of 2-1. The Knights would not go quietly though, answering right back to tie the contest again. A great stretch pass from Richie Brusco to Florczak created a 3-on-1 break for the Knights and a Florczak pass set up Boyle's first goal of the game to make it 2-2. Neumann could not keep the game tied long though, as a pair of Manhattanville goals gave them a 4-2 lead late in the period. The Knights were able to get a goal back on the power-play with just 17 seconds remaining in the frame, but still trailed 4-3 heading to the third.

As the game moved to the final 20 minutes of play, Manhattanville took total control of the contest. The Valiants scored twice in the first five minutes of the frame, then tacked on an insurance marker later in the period to skate away with the comfortable 7-3 win.

Neumann (0-10-2, 0-6-2 UCHC) will have the next month off for the holiday break before returning to action on January 4th versus Norwich University in the Northfield Savings Bank Holiday Tournament. Puck-drop for the non-conference matchup is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
