NORTHFIELD, Vt. - The Neumann University men's ice hockey team resumed its season after the holiday break with a 4-1 defeat to host Norwich University in the opening round of the Northfield Savings Bank Holiday Tournament on Friday night.
Â
Zac Boyle scored Neumann's lone goal on the evening, while
Mike Cosentino got the start in goal making 26 saves in the loss.
Â
The opening period would be an evenly played affair, with the Cadets holding a 7-5 edge in shots. Neither team would find the scoreboard though, as the game headed to intermission knotted at 0-0.
Â
The second stanza would be all Norwich. The hosts outshot the Knights by a count of 14-1 in the frame, scoring the only goal in the period to take a 1-0 lead into the final 20 minutes. Cosentino was the lone bright spot for Neumann in the period, stopping 13 shots to keep the visitors in the game.
Â
After a relatively quiet first 40 minutes, the game finally opened up in the third period. Unfortunately for Neumann, the Norwich lead opened up as well. The Cadets tacked on two more goals in the opening 10 minutes of the frame to take a commanding 3-0 lead. The Knights fought back with Boyle's fourth goal of the season at the 16:03 mark of the period, but an empty net marker from Norwich with just over two minutes left to play sealed the 4-1 win for the hosts.
Â
Neumann (0-11-2, 0-6-2 UCHC) returns to the ice for a consolation matchup versus Buffalo State tomorrow at 4:00 PM.
