CHESTER, Pa. – The Neumann University women's lacrosse team suffered its first loss of the season on Wednesday evening, falling on the road at Widener University by a score of 19-8.
Kaitlyn Conrad led the team with three goals and an assist in the loss, while
Calie Swegon notched a pair of goals as well.
Brittany Cassidy and
Lydia Beckman each picked up four ground-balls and goalie
Gabby Curry made 13 saves.
Unlike Saturday's strong first-half performance in the team's win over Goucher, Neumann struggled to get anything going in the opening half of play versus the Pride. Widener took control of the game from the opening whistle, scoring the game's opening four goals in the first eight minutes of play to take an early 4-0 lead. The Knights fought back with a pair of goals from Conrad and
Keri Mallon midway through the frame, but seven Widener goals in the final 11 minutes of the half sent the game to halftime with the hosts leading 11-2.
Neumann played much better in the second half, scoring three of the period's first four goals, but the Pride continued to be too much for the visitors. Despite six Neumann goals in the half, Widener cruised to a comfortable 19-8 victory.
Neumann (1-1) returns to the field on Saturday, February 24
th when the team heads to The College of New Jersey. Game-time is scheduled for 1:00 PM.
