ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University men's basketball team will head to Cabrini University on Saturday to play for the Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) Championship. Tip-off is slated for 7:00 PM.
Neumann went 13-5 in conference action and is the No. 3 seed in the playoffs. The Knights are currently 20-7 overall. Cabrini was 16-2 in CSAC play for the No. 1 seed. The Cavaliers are 23-3 overall so far this season.
This is the fifth straight appearance in the CSAC Championship for the Knights under fifth-year head coach
Jim Rullo. Neumann has won two titles in the past four seasons and will look for its second straight on Saturday.
This will be the third time Neumann and Cabrini will meet for the Championship over the past five seasons. During the 2013-14 season, the Cavaliers won 96-79. The next season, 2014-15, the Knights won their first championship by a 93-92 score in overtime.
The Knights have
had two tough games on their path to the Championship. In the first round, Neumann defeated Keystone at home 78-65. Tyaire Hudson scored a game-high 26 points in the win as five Knights netted double-digits. Raquan Brown-Johnson netted 17 points while Billy Cassidy added 11 and dished out five assists. Aaron Johnson-Chavis tallied a double-double with 15 rebounds and 10 points while adding six blocks. Isaiah Wilmore also scored 10 points.
In the semi-finals, Neumann used a big second half to upend Gwynedd Mercy 102-85 on the road. Hudson and Johnson-Chavis each scored 25 points in the win. Jordan Collins tallied a double-double with 23 points and 12 rebounds. Brown-Johnson added 15 points.
For the season, Hudson is leading the team with 17.5 points per game. CSAC Defensive Player and Rookie of the Year Johnson-Chavis is adding 14.9 points and 10.0 rebounds. The freshman has tallied a team-high 76 blocks. Brown-Johnson is averaging 14.1 points while Cassidy is adding 12.6. Cassidy leads the team in three-pointers, connecting on 90 this season.
During the regular season, the Knights and Cavaliers split their two games, each winning on their home court. In Radnor, Cabrini came away with a 105-76 win.
Brown-Johnson tallied 20 points and
Johnson-Chavis added 10.
Back at the Mirenda Center, Neumann rebounded with a 92-83 win to even the season series.
Johnson-Chavis led Neumann with 23 points while adding 13 rebounds for a double-double.
Hudson tallied 18 points, including going 6-for-8 from the line, and
Brown-Johnson added 17.
Cassidy hit three from beyond the arc to finish with 12 points while handing out five assists.
The winner on Saturday will receive the CSAC automatic qualifier to the NCAA Tournament. The selection show will take place on Monday.
