Men's Ice Hockey Wins Back and Forth Battle Versus Bryn Athyn

ASTON, Pa. – The Neumann University men's ice hockey team bounced back from a tough road loss Friday evening with a 6-4 non-conference win at home over Bryn Athyn College on Saturday night.

Joe Mitchell remained hot for the Knights, notching a pair of goals to go along with an assist. Ryan Swain posted three helpers, while Liam Board and Corey Kennedy each added a goal and an assist. Sammy Bernard made the start in goal, stopping 34 shots to pick up the win.

In a back and forth first period that featured a combined five goals between the two teams, Neumann got on the board first as Kennedy rifled home his own rebound to put the hosts out in front 1-0 just 1:31 into the contest. Penalties would haunt the Knights the rest of the period though, as Bryn Athyn tallied two of the game's next three goals on the power-play, sandwiched around a tally from Eric Madison.

Despite the two Lion goals, the Knights would get the last laugh in the frame. With the game tied 2-2 late in the period, Neumann used a fantastic passing sequence from Kennedy and Swain to set up a slam dunk goal from Board at the 16:07 mark. The goal sent Neumann to intermission up by a score of 3-2.

Bryn Athyn answered back with a somewhat fluky goal of their own to start the second stanza. A shot from the point deflected off a Knights defender and into the back of the net to tie things up at three. The Lions looked to keep their momentum rolling on a 5-on-3 power play just minutes after the tying goal, but Mitchell had other ideas. The junior forward stripped a Bryn Athyn defender of the puck in his own end, raced down the ice and outmuscled another defender before calmly depositing a back-hander through the Lion goaltender's legs to put Neumann back on top 4-3.

The Lions would not go quietly though, scoring on another power-play just six minutes later to again knot the contest up. The game looked to be heading to intermission tied at 4-4, but a late power-play gave the Knights a chance to regain the lead late in the frame. The hosts would do just that, as Mitchell banged home his second goal of the game with just over a minute left in the stanza to give Neumann the lead heading to the third.

Up by a goal, Neumann looked to gain some insurance early in the final period of play. Mitchell was again the spark for the Knights, firing a shot from the point that was deflected into the net by Jake Davidson at the 11:37 mark. The goal gave Neumann its first two goal lead of the evening and a bit of breathing room in the final minutes of play.

Despite the two-goal lead, the Knights did not make it easy late in the game. Two five-minute major power-plays for the Lions kept Neumann in its defensive end for much of the final ten minutes of play, but solid goaltending from Bernard and some excellent team defense kept the two-goal lead intact. The Lions would not score again, and the Knights would skate away with the 6-4 victory.

Neumann (7-13-2, 6-5-2 UCHC) returns to the ice next weekend for two huge home UCHC games. Puck-drop on Friday, February 9th versus Nazareth College is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
