Women's Ice Hockey Sees Win Streak Snapped at Nichols

2/3/2018 11:19:00 PM

Box Score DUDLEY, Mass. – The Neumann University women's ice hockey team saw its seven-game win-streak snapped on Saturday evening, falling by a score of 5-2 in the second game of its two-game series with Nichols College.

Katelyn Brown scored her 10th goal of the season in the loss, while Lauren Vanstone added her third goal of the season. Helen Cooney got the start in goal, making 20 saves.

Seeking a program-record eighth consecutive win, the Knights began the game strong. Brown tallied just under five minutes into the first frame to put Neumann ahead 1-0. The Bison responded three minutes later to knot the game up at one apiece, but a Vanstone goal at the 11:21 mark of the period sent the Knights to the first intermission up 2-1. Shots in the period were 10-8 in favor of Neumann.

Unfortunately for the visitors, the two first period goals would be the only Neumann highlights of the night. Nichols found the back of the net twice in the second stanza without a reply from the Knights and headed to the third up by a score of 3-2.

The Knights fought valiantly to get the game tied in the final period of play, outshooting the Bison by a count of 13-6, but a pair of power play goals for Nichols sealed the 5-2 win for the hosts. Special teams would be the difference in the game, as the Bison went 3-for-6 on the man-advantage while Neumann went 0-for-7.

Neumann (12-6-2, 9-2-1 UCHC) will look to shake off the loss before a critical home and home United Collegiate Hockey Conference (UCHC) series with Stevenson University next weekend. The Knights will head to Maryland for the first game of the weekend on Friday, February 9th at 3:30 PM, then return home for senior day on Saturday, February 10th at 4:00 PM.
